1.  Bellringer:  Why did trench warfare lead to a stalemate (neither side could win)?
2.  Finish Trench Warfare (Movie clip).  Identify reasons why trench warfare was so terrifying to soldiers.
3.  Read the following primary source document from Richard Schmieder (in the trenches), March 13, 1915.  What is he saying ABOUT trench warfare?
  • “In three days, on a front of about 200 yards, we lost 909 men, and the enemy casualties amounted to thousands…. Don’t ask about the fate of the wounded! Anybody who was incapable of walking to the doctor had to die a miserable death; some lingering in agony for hours, for days and even for a week…..There are moments when even the bravest soldier is so utterly sick of the whole thing that he could cry like a child.”
